This bright red encrusting bryozoan is abundant under rocks in shallow waters. Colonies rarely grow to more than two centimetres in diameter. Their bright red colouration and lack of a margin (zooids grow all the way to the edge of the colony) distinguishes this species from other encrusting bryozoans, although microscopic analysis can be required to differentiate other members of the Mucropetraliella genus. This bryozoan is preyed upon by Madrella sea slugs, which share its deep red colouration and blend in almost perfectly.
