Closely resembling dead Posidonia seagrass, this distinctive pipefish is brown with white mottling. It is named for its squarish head and its crest, which gives it a similar profile to the rhinoceros. It is very similar in appearance to its close relative, Histiogamphelus briggsii, although it has a shorter snout. Because of this, its crest also extends backwards past the level of its eye, unlike H. briggsii.
