This goby was introduced from Asia and inhabits sandy or muddy bays and harbours. There are two common colour variations. One is silvery-white in colour, with two dark horizontal stripes on each side of its body, while the other is olive to dark brown, with dark horizontal stripes and vertical bars, creating a checkerboard pattern. It is also recognisable by its extremely short and blunt snout.
