Size: 65cm length, 1m wingspan

Distribution: All SA coast and inland waterways

Habitat: Wetlands and coast

Depth: N/A

Found mostly in wetlands or on the coast, this small egret is plain white in colour, with a dark bill. Its face, between the eyes and bill, is naked and bright yellow. It is similar in appearance to the Great Egret (Ardea alba), although its smaller size, shorter neck (which is shorter than the length of its body) and dark bill are distinguishing features. Howerver, it should be noted that the adult Great Egret's bill can also be dark in breeding season.
