This clingfish gets its common name from its elongated, eel-like body. It is variable in colour, ranging from orange-brown to bright green, and it often has one or more large spots or blotches on down each side of its body. There are a number of true eels (Anguilliformes) found in South Australia, but A. dorsalis is less elongate than most eels. It is also similar in appearance to weedfish of the genus Ophiclinus, but in most cases can be distinguished by colouration.
