This medium-sized flathead is pale brown to maroon in colour, with darker blotches and saddles. It can be distinguished from other flathead species by its crocodilian head with a series of spines along the ridges. It has an obvious lappet or fringe hanging over each pupil, which in large adults can almost cover the entire pupil.
