Distribution: SA coastal and gulf waters east of Port Lincoln
Habitat: Rocky reef
Depth: Subtidal from 2 to 10+ metres
This benthic fish is difficult to spot amongst the rubble, as its tassels greatly resemble red algae. It is a poor swimmer, but a successful ambush hunter, where it uses its "lure" to draw fishes into its large upturned mouth. The lure is a whitish colour, set against the reddish brown of its tassels, and resembles a marine worm. Its unique appearance ensures that it is not easily mistaken for any other species, except maybe a red algae!
