The Australian Herring, or "Tommy Ruff" is a small silvery fish often seen in the upper-middle of the water column. Although they can be distinguished by their small size, torpedo shape and vertical bars on their back, they closely resemble the juvenile Australian Salmon, from which they can most reliably be distinguished by the dark tips of their tail.
