Size: 5 cm

Distribution: All SA coastal and gulf waters

Habitat: Seagrass beds

Depth: Subtidal to 10+ metres

This fish forms small schools, usually of around 10 or so individuals, on the edges of seagrass beds, or the sandy areas within them. They have a distinctive way of moving, usually hanging motionless in the water, face down at an angle, darting from one location to another. They have a blunt snout, large eye, and are countershaded with white against gold, green and/or orange. They are also recognisable by the large black blotch on the caudal peduncle.
