Juvenile Yelloweye Mullet
This common species of mullet can be encountered, often in large schools, in a variety of coastal environments. It is tolerant of low salinity and even freshwater, and can be found in estuaries and occasionally rivers, as well as on marine coasts. In coastal environments, this species is often found in shallow water, or other areas of high water movement, such as above shallow rock platforms. It is slender, with small scales and no noticeable dark spot at the pectoral fin base, which helps to distinguish it from other species of mullet. Although it's not always present, especially in younger individuals, this species can also be easily recognised by its golden iris.
