This medium to large murex shell is usually heavily-encrusted and difficult to detect. It can be identified by the set of three long thin ridges on the shell, which give it a vaguely triangular shape when viewed side-on. When visible, its shell is cream to white. While Prototyphis angasi also has similar ridges, that species has large wings or hooks at the front end, and has a much more jagged appearance overall.
