Lyria mitraeformis - Lyre Shell

This snail is not commonly seen during the day, but emerges from sandy areas to feed at night. Its shell is white or cream, with wide, broken sprial bands of brown or orange and heavy axial ribbing. It has a particularly large body whorl. The animal itself is cream, with red to maroon speckling, blotches and spots. There are only a few snails that are similar in form, and all tend to be much smaller, making this one easier to identify.
