This distinctive chiton has dark brown valves, with streaks of white near the jugum. The wide girdle is usually orange, to dark brown, and covered in very fine scales and small hairy spicules, giving it a velvety appearance. Juveniles are paler, both the girdle and the brown colouration on the valves.
