This striking chiton is usually encountered under rocks, and many can often be found under a single rock. It had a thin girdle with relatively large pearly scales. Its pattern can vary, but it usually features a line of longitudinal streaks along the jugum, and areas of dark colouration with scattered blue spots, usually limited to the pleural areas of the valves. The lateral areas and terminal valves usually feature a pattern of lines (very) loosely resembling flames. The overall colouration is white, with brown and/or green. It closely resembles both I. lentiginosus and I. thomasi, but the flame pattern is diagnostic.
