One of the largest crinoids found in SA's shallow waters, this species is usually is patchy in colouration, from a rusty orange to maroon, pink or purple in colour. It has bushy arms, long pinnules and a swollen calyx (disc). Its closest relative on our coasts is C. trichoptera, but that species is usually even larger and more uniform in colour, with dark arms and orange pinnules. Juveniles can be confused with other species, such as Antedon loveni, and expert examination can be required.
