Distribution: Few SA records outside gulf waters, but probably found right along the coastline
Habitat: Rocky coast under rocks
Depth: Lower intertidal
This striking chiton is red in colour, from orange-red to maroon, often with white bars or patches on the girdle. It is very similar to the red form of Rhyssoplax tricostalis, but it can be distinguished by its velvety girdle with tiny scales, and its low keel, which makes this species very flat, especially when compared to the high-keeled Rhyssoplax chitons.
