Mullets are a family of silvery, streamlined fish that are often encountered in schools. Many species, including those found in southern Australia feed on detritus, and are often found in the surge zone, particularly when the high tide washes over flat limestone or rocky reef, dislodging particles of food. These fish are not related to the "red mullets", or goatfish (family Mullidae).
