Sea squirts, or tunicates, are filter feeders that take in water through a siphon, feeding on the particles, then expel the filtered water through another siphon. They include the free-floating Salps and sessile Ascidians, which can be further divided into solitary, colonial and compound types. They consist of one or more animals encased in a tough outer tunic, or "test".
