Brown algae (Class Phaeophyceae) are a group of multicellular plants, most of which contain the compound fucoxanthin, giving them a green-brown colouration. They absorb nutrients by photosynthesis, and many species have gas-filled floats called pneumatocysts that increase buoyancy, and therefore can absorb more light.
