Green algae is the name for a group of green, unicellular plants, the most common of which is the phylum Chlorophyta. They absorb nutrients by photosynthesis, and in some cases are even incorporated into other organisms as specialised cells to facilitate photosynthesis for those organisms (such as the tropical Diplosoma virens ascidian). Being unicellular, green algae reproduce by cellular mitosis.
