The ray-finned fishes of class Actinopterygii are the most abundant vertebrates in the marine environment, as well as globally. They come in a variety of different forms, but are distinguished from other types of fishes (such as sharks) by the structure of their fins, which consist of bony rays attached to the skeleton and supporting webs of skin.
