The boxfishes of the family Aracanidae (as distinguished from tropical boxfishes of the family Ostraciidae) are small, roughly oval-shaped fishes, their bodies encased in hard scale plates. They are mostly found in deeper water, although a few species are found at diving depth from about 3m. They are sexually dimorphic, with males having different colours and patterns to females.
