Although vascular plants of the phylum Tracheophyta are commonly known as "land plants", they are regularly encountered in the marine environment as well. They are distinguished from the marine alga by having specialised roots, stems and leaves, and also contain vascular tissues designed to transport nutrients and other resources throughout the plant. Most vascular plants in the marine environment belong to the seagrasses.
